The urbanization of the area surrounding Long Island Railroad’s Montauk Cutoff has taken a toll on the ecological communities once present in Long Island City. The natural landscapes, once prevalent in the area are now few in number, and they are not ecologically productive enough to sustain diversity for either plant or animal life. Our proposal, the Wild Line, integrates nature into our everyday surroundings, so that ecological communities can build life in safety by creating space in which natural cycles can occur.
The Wild Line will transform the Long Island City community by injecting a new sense of life: creating new kinds of habitat for animals, humans, birds, insects, and microorganisms. It will create a unique ecological and cultural space for the neighborhood connecting people with their natural surroundings. In the following pages, we outline how the project would affect this positive change in the community.
The project engages a range of biological/ecological processes. Beginning on a microscopic level, the “Wild Line” will be a place of intense microbial activity. Microbes are at the root of all healthy soils and the greening of the Montauk Cutoff will allow for the conversion of the former industrial site into a new natural environment. Healthy soil conditions will allow for the reintroduction of native plant species. The plants will be carefully chosen to provide sustenance for wildlife. Their seeds will act as nourishment for bird species that will make the Wild
Line their home. Their flowers will be pollinated by insects that will flourish in the newly created habitat. Lastly, the Wild Line will play host to a variety of animals seeking refuge from the city.
Perhaps the most important aspect of Wild Line is that it will provide a place where community members will engage with their surroundings. It will be a sanctuary for urban dwellers across the city, and it will create a space for new educational, conversational, and social opportunities.
